Understanding the Benefits of ISO 9001

by Graham McPatrick

Columbus, Ohio based Ohio Laser LLC recently received ISO 9001:2008 certification, a quality management system maintained by the International Organization for Standardization.

Ohio Laser's President Gregg Simpson frequently explains exactly what the ISO 9001 certification is, and why it's valuable to their customers. Simpson states that the top benefit of the ISO 9001 certification is the improved quality control in using the system.

Simpson further explains to his customers that all companies that have the ISO 9001 certification must maintain detailed records, manage processes that handle key procedures in the business, review production output for any defects with a correction plan in place, systematically check processes as well as evaluate the quality system for its overall effectiveness and work to instill continual improvement.

There are very specific requirements a company must adhere to in order to receive and maintain the ISO 9001: 2008 certification.

First, creating a customer communication system is required. This system conveys such information as product inquiries, orders and complaints to and from vendors, customers and stakeholders.

The product development phase in a 9001 certified company must include testing and documentation at each stage. Testing must ensure that products meet regulatory and design requirements and of course, user needs.

The management team of an ISO 9001 company is required to establish a quality policy. This policy unifies the marketing and business plans with the needs of the customers. All employees must follow this quality policy. The system is continually monitored for its effectiveness and performance. This is to make sure that it is working as well as make improvements. These audits and the decisions that result from them must be documented with detailed records.

Simpson reports that Ohio Laser worked diligently for almost 2 years to achieve the ISO 9001 certification. He says the employees at Ohio Laser staff are proud to offer this quality standard as an added benefit for their customers.

Over the last twelve years with 19 employees, Ohio Laser has established itself as a leading edge laser cutting and metal fabrication shop in the United States. Some of their signature services include flat and tube laser cutting, CNC bending, robotic welding, surface finishing and machining. Industries such as the automotive, construction equipment, medical devices, aerospace, medium and heavy truck, and material handling industries are just a few industries that commonly benefit from the services that Ohio Laser offers.
