Learn Why Purchasing Your Company Promotional Gifts From Small Suppliers Can Cost You A Lot More Money

by Ciaran Murphy

Purchasing promotional items is no different to purchasing any other necessity and it matters not if you are shopping for promotional bottled water or leather conference folders. The firm you buy it from is the key to a successful purchase. In the old days you might walk down your nearby shopping centre and purchase almost all your requirements in individual shops, your meat came from the butcher your nails came from the ironmonger and your flowers came from the florist. Purchasing promotional gifts was no different back then. If you were producing an event or having an exhibition and required a quantity of promotional clothing you went along to a specialist seller who was able to show you a good range. Then if you required business gifts to give away you contacted the promotional pen supplier and bought the pens, or your promotional mugs dealer and so on. However these days things are no longer the same..

A few companies such as those selling corporate clothing still tend to be quite specialised on the other hand the majority of the alternative single product category suppliers have consolidated. As with supermarkets such as Morrisons or Tesco you can now visit a one stop shop for almost all your promotional products. Whilst a lot people still prefer to stick with the past it really no longer makes any sense.

The serious buyers of promotional items tend to be the major corporations and they have a totally different agenda to the little businessman who wants a small quantity of promotional items for a particular event. The big players will be looking at cost advantages in terms of the promotional gifts they buy and also in terms of how long the process takes. They do not want their workers needing to contact up to half a dozen small business gift houses for just one event, it basically takes too long. They will be also mindful that they have to be very careful about the safety testing of those branded products. And they have to be confident that the goods were ethically sourced.

The dilemma with companies that deal in individual commodity promotional items is that they don't have the size or clout to be able to provide many of these prerequisites. Unless for example we take the case of Parker Pens or Mont Blanc. Both these firms are huge and have ample resources in terms of personnel and finance to cover all the above points. On the other hand take a small seller of promotional products they might well be able to provide branded T-shirts or embroidered polo shirts nevertheless they have in all probability never heard of ethical trading or service level agreements.

The conclusion has to be that whilst modest one man companies who supply a range of promotional gifts for instance leather conference folders, branded T-shirts, embroidered polo shirts or leather conference folders are nice in an old fashioned way they simply cannot offer the same levels of service as the major traders. Ask yourself this question, when you next need to buy your groceries will you go to a supermarket where you will get a wonderful selection at low cost? Or will you go to your local high street where you can't park your car, you will have to wait to be served in every shop and pay more for a much smaller variety of goods. I rest my case.
